Black of Dunoon ( Last Assessed 2014)

Black of Dunoon is one of the longest traditional  Bakeries in Dunoon supplying a fair part of the country with their excellent Baking. I must say i am a little bias when it comes to this Bakery as they supplied my very first Tearoom in Arrochar until i got on my feet back in 1992. The Chelsea Buns,Fudge donuts, and Danish pastries are still some of the best i have tasted . If you are looking for traditional old fashioned baking which is expertly done on a massive industrial scale then this is hard to beat . Dunoon has a great asset in this Tearoom come Bakery and i for one never pass it when in town .

Today was a busy day for assessments in the Scottish Borders and quite disappointing until stumbling across a small board sign on the main road simply stating "Soup and yummy cakes" . Now, when we turned in where the arrow told us it looked like an industrial estate with shop units -which it was ,but never judge a book by its cover i say . In through the arch of the Meringue Place and you are transported into CAKE heaven. I decided to stay and try the soup as the cakes just looked to good to be in and out in our usual haste. The Lentil and ham (off the bone) soup was simply devine but to be served with a simply stunning herby scone was heavenly. We were then bombarded with an array of samples (Full size portions i may add) to try .Here goes - The carrot cake was light and fluffy ,the meringues powdery the way i, in the minority like them ,the Lemon and fresh cream roulade was one i had not tried before and was as tart as it gets - to die for !! The flys graveyard excellent as was the coconut and chocolate crispie slice. Now i could go on and on about the extensive display of quite simply excellent cakes but please dont just take my word for it .go and see Sharon herself ,this lady used to supply Asda and Baxters and then in her wisdom decided to set up her own place.A very unique and unusual "place " but well worth the wait today .Well done Sharon and her young team.

Kittys tearoom

Kittys Tearoom is in New Galloway outside Castle Douglas . This beautiful Victorian house dates back to 1840 and the inside is like stepping back in time( in a good way). Beautiful crockery and old fashioned charm set amidst beautiful countryside. When we arrived Kittys was full to the limits and we were unable to assess the homebaking on offer. Kittys closes for the winter and re-opens at easter and therefore a welcome return will be necessary to assess this premises properly.

Garden Wise Garden Centre

Driving through Dumfries and Galloway today in horrific weather conditions was not the best experience i had had for assessments and especially not when the places i was supposed to be assessing were not up to much. After 3 hours driving there with no joy i decided to stop at the first place for some lunch -well thank goodness i did. Garden Wise Garden Centre is a huge very well run family owned Garden Centre with a self -service coffee shop at the back. Now usually with self -service you kind off know what you are going to get and dont have high expectations - but not this place. It was firstly packed full of people which is usually a good sign and the first thing to hit you is the huge display of HOMEMADE cakes all made on the premises. The Homemade Quiche was quite simply the fattest ,tastiest and lightest Quiche i have ever eaten and the crisp fresh salad and homemade coleslaw was just not expected - excellent.I had 3 x cakes . The Bannoffee cake, caramel shortcake and Chocolate biscuit slice - excellent homebaking and fresh that day . You have to give credit where credit is due and for the largest of Garden Centres to be producing this standard of food AND Homebaking is exceptional. Well done team and next time i will be back to look around the Huge Garden Centre.

Chantilly Lace Tearoom

awardChantilly Lace Tearoom was nominated online today.

117 Main Street

Today was a lovely day for a drive through Loch Lomond and into Alexandria .Chantilly Lace was the first of my stops today and i arrived just in time to join the owner Eileen at her well earned lunch.Chantilly Lace snuggles in between many shops in Alexandrias main Street and is a refreshing change into the "Olde Worlde " charm of the early Victorian era.Bone china teacups and crockery adorn the tables and beautiful swaying lace on the walls, windows and tables. The afternoon tea is served on the traditional 3 Tiered plates and well priced. I was offered quite a selection of samples including a most unusual Coca cola and Chocolate cake -very good. I also tasted some Homebaking from Eileens daughter as she now has learned to bake from her mum . The iced gingerbread bun was one of the best i have ever tasted. This intrepid duo have created a lovely refreshing change to the surroundings in which they lie and i for one will be back .
